Lithium-Ion Batteries and Charging – Fire Risk

As the use of Lithium Ion Batteries has increased exponentially in recent years, so has the risk of Lithium-Ion batteries exploding especially whilst being charged.

There seems to be no discrimination for one brand of battery responsible for more explosions than another, nor whether the battery is from a battery drill , an RF scanner or a rechargeable torch etc.

If a  battery being charged is submitted to over charging or is simply faulty, it heats up ,  it is particularly vulnerable when overcharging then high temperatures cause a thermal runaway event, then the battery can violently explode shooting flames in the air for up to an hour.

We found that automatic fire suppression devices require an explosion ( Which could be up to 150 Degrees C ) to activate the device , it can only be deployed once and is only for thermal runaway fires after any explosion has occurred. If any of the other Batteries within the cabinet explode from that intense heat, then the Automatic Fire Suppression unit will be of no use as it will have been spent.

Our JAGBE Li-Ion PODs  (Charging Station Cabinets ) are designed as a preventative  to mitigate batteries exploding with multiple electric fans to keep the batteries cool.  Should a battery explode the pod should contain the explosion and contain the fire from the thermal runaway event from then on.  The HotWall ™ insulation is designed for continuous fire rating of 1260 degrees C to allow the burning battery time to spend its energy and eventually burn out.  Prevention is certainly better than clean up after the fact.

The seperate compartments are divided with HotWall insulated shelves to compartmentalise the blaze from a burning battery to mitigate the chances of alighting the batteries in a neighbouring compartment above or below.

Location of your JAGBE Li-ion Pod must not be within 3m of any combustable or flammable material . Never open the doors to watch your batteries burn , the Hydrogen Fluoride gas and smoke generated from the lithium Battery Explosion is extremely Toxic.

There have been 100s of incidents of Lithium-Ion Batteries exploding with many destroying buildings , not only companies are being hit by these random battery explosions.  Check the internet to confirm it.

For Safe Charging of – Battery operated tools, Drones, Golf bag trollies , RF scanners , Tasers , Laptops , Lamps , lasers , Power packs, Medical equipment,  we don’t recommend charging e bike batteries over 18 Volts

For charging up to 18 Volt Lithium-Ion Batteries with chargers that have less than a 1.8 amp output.

This Lithium Battery shows how Violently the battery explosion can be . It can take about 4 seconds to reach 400 Degrees C, then the temperature can escalate to over 1000 degrees C.

Lithium-Ion batteries which explode in power tools can take 1-2 hours to spend the energy they store, often the Fire Service can’t do anything to put these fires out as it is energy fuelling the flames not solvents or fuels that require oxygen to burn .
