Lithium-Ion Batteries and Charging – Fire Risk

Read this .. Be aware      .

As the use of Lithium Ion Batteries has increased exponentially in recent years, so has the risk of Lithium-Ion batteries exploding especially whilst being charged.

There seems to be no discrimination for one brand of battery responsible for more explosions than another, nor whether the battery is from a battery tool , an RF scanner or a rechargeable torch etc.

If a  battery being charged is submitted to over charging or is simply faulty, it heats up ,  it is particularly vulnerable when overcharging then high temperatures cause a thermal runaway event, the battery can violently explode shooting flames in the air for up to an hour or maybe two.

6 months of R & D in 2019

Our R&D showed us that containing the explosion and allowing the batteries to spend their energy was the only way to control the situation..

We soon learnt that the heat from an exploding battery could penetrate the steel wall of the cabinet which is why we opted to find and develop our HotWall extreme temperature insulation (rated at 1260 Deg C and 1430 Deg C) and sandwiched it between the walls, roof, floor and shelf skins. This produced a compartmentalised cocoon for four batteries to live in whilst decreasing the circle of influence and the risks of one battery igniting all of the batteries in the cabinet.  You can imagine this could become a very large fire with all batteries having thermal run-away events and re-ignition at the same time.

We found that automatic fire suppression devices require an explosion ( Which could be up to 150 Degrees C ) to activate the device , it can only be deployed once and is only for thermal runaway fires after any explosion has occurred. If any of the other Batteries within the cabinet explode from that intense heat, then the Automatic Fire Suppression unit will be of no use as it will have already been spent.

We found that the only way to control a lithium-ion battery fire was to contain the explosion and let the battery spend its energy.

And do not use water to try to put it out, you will only create more Hydrogen Fluoride Gas and Smoke, just do nothing and wait for the battery to spend its energy, which could be an hour or two at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees C. Any normal uninsulated steel cabinet would probably be completely red hot after that time and that temperature.

Our JAGBE Li-Ion PODs  (Charging Station Cabinets ) are designed as a preventative  to mitigate batteries exploding with multiple electric fans to keep the batteries cool in each of their compartments .  Should a battery explode,  there needs to be an outlet for the huge pressure created by the hydrogen fluoride gas and explosion . A thermal runaway event may keep igniting the battery as it rebuilds its energy to start up again.   The Interior HotWall ™ insulation sandwiched between the double walled skins is designed for continuous fire rating of 1260 degrees C to allow the burning battery time to spend its energy and eventually burn out.

The seperate compartments are divided with 1260 deg C HotWall insulated shelves to compartmentalise the blaze from a burning battery to mitigate the chances of alighting the batteries in a neighbouring compartment above or below.

JAGBE LI-ION pods are professionally purpose designed, manufactured and patented to be fit for purpose, Jagbe have spent a huge amount of time on Research and Development and ensure the Li-ion Pods range are part of our continuous improvement program.   These pods are not just a modified flammable goods cabinet with an air gap between the walls. We tried that  4 years ago.. JAGBE clearly states the specifications around the fire ratings that the cabinets are required withstand and even have developed heavy duty range of pods especially for 48 Volt E-bike batteries and 1430 Degree C  continuous fire rated Hotwall insulation in the spaces between wall skins and shelves.

Location of your JAGBE Li-ion Pod should not be within 3m of any combustable or flammable material . Just an extra precaution to be aware of the seriousness that these batteries portray

Never open the doors to watch your batteries burn , the Hydrogen Fluoride gas and smoke generated from the lithium Battery Explosion is extremely Toxic.

There have been 100s of incidents of Lithium-Ion Batteries exploding with many destroying buildings , not only companies are being hit by these random battery explosions.  Check the internet to confirm it.

This Lithium Battery shows how Violently the battery explosion can be . It can take about 4 seconds to reach 400 Degrees C, then the temperature can escalate to over 1000 degrees C.

Lithium-Ion batteries which explode in power tools can take 1-2 hours to spend the energy they store, often the Fire Service can’t do anything to put these fires out as it is energy fuelling the flames not solvents or fuels that require oxygen to burn .
